The heel is an element of the shoe placed under the heel. Its main function is aesthetic, that is to increase height and give momentum to the calf. It is found applied to shoes, boots or sandals.
It was introduced in the 2nd century AD. in Persia to give greater stability to the knights in the stirrups during battles. Subsequently, around 1350 AD, it appeared in Turkey and Hungary. Around 1605, the presence of heels in the first price lists testifies to their diffusion in Europe, where the function was purely aesthetic, with the aim of making the person appear taller: in fact, it was wedge-shaped, placed between the sole and the heel. While in the Baroque era it finds its maximum expression for height and decorations.
